Friends of Mujeres de la Tierra hasn't added a story.
Mujeres de la Tierra is a collective of indigenous women defending their lands and their lives against violence through cultivating traditional crops, cooking for their communities and sharing ancestral knowledge. Located in the village of Santa Ana Tlacotenco, Milpa Alta, their work focuses on the vital connections between ancestral food practices, personal and public health and the preservation of Mexico’s deep history of communal land tenure.
The group is looking to purchase land in southern Mexico City to increase the impact of their work protecting and preserving Indigenous land stewardship practices. Having a plot of land to call their own will enable the group to:
- Bolster collective economic sovereignty
- Offer workshops for local youth
- Cultivate milpa
- Provide shelter for survivors of domestic violence
- Preserve ancestral knowledge and practices
Although technically contained within the political designation of Mexico City, Milpa Alta is recognized as communal indigenous territory: land ownership is structured according to Nahua tradition and administered by a community assembly, la Asamblea, which draws representatives from the twelve pueblos comuneros. Property is most often inherited via family relations but in select cases land rights can be transferred if la Asamblea approve of the land’s intended use and believe it to be for the benefit of the local community, as is the case with this project.
For more information on the project and the specific plot of land we are looking to purchase, please see our project proposal.
Note: If you are looking to make a rather large donation to this project, we encourage you to mail a check rather than donating online in order to avoid hefty credit card fees. Donation by check instructions can be found at the end of the proposal.
